In November 1941, Delfim Ferreira, an important businessman of the north of Portugal and responsible for the electrification of much of the Douro wine region, purchases Quinta dos Frades (literally, “friar´s estate”). This estate, so called because it had belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Salzedas, is one of the largest and most historic of the Douro Valley. Wine production in this property dates back to the thirteenth century by the hand of the Cistercians. The entire estate is classified as category A (the highest category in the Douro) and has always been known for producing top quality Port wines, which were and still are regularly sold to the Port shippers of Vila Nova de Gaia. In 2008, taking advantage of the enormous potential of the traditional vineyards of the estate, Delfim Ferreira´s great-grandsons started a project to produce a small quantity of table wine from the best vineyards of the estate. The first vintage of this wine was awarded with the Prémio de Excelência (Revista de Vinhos, Feb 2011), an important recognition given only to the top best wines of Portugal. In February 2012, Quinta dos Frades was awarded New Wine Producer of the Year, a recognition also given by Revista de Vinhos to newcomers in order to highlight their excellent growing reputation.
