Buçaco is a mystical winery belonging to the homonymous Palace Hotel and created by the visionary original owner Alexandre de Almeida. Resplendent in its decorative Manueline-Gothic architecture, this legendary Palace was built for the last King of Portugal in 1885, converted into a deluxe hotel in 1917, and is nowadays one of the most beautiful and historic hotels in the world. Alexandre envisioned the hotel as “a cathedral of wine” to show off the region, using grapes sourced from the hotel’s own vineyards as well as local growers in the Dao and Bairrada, and started bottling the exclusive world-class Buçaco wines, ‘mis-en-bouteille-au-château’, in 1917. With a track record of 9 decades served to the royal palates, these are some of the most fabulously well-matured wines that maintain their vibrancy but attain a unique complexity that only age can impart.
“Drinking a Buçaco wine is like travelling through time… All wine lovers should be offered this opportunity at least once in a lifetime.”
