Luis Pato (Portuguese for ‘duck’) is the best-known producer in the Bairrada region. He is widely regarded as the modernizer who brought a struggling region back to life, but it is unfair to see him just in his light. Pato’s wines have a traditional side to them, and he is also a champion of the local, noble red grape, Baga. Now that the regulations in Bairrada has changed, allowing growers in the region to use other grape varieties, Pato could be considered a neo-traditionalist, a forerunner and visionary of the heritage and potential of the region.
